Tower made the long trip east to Thame today on a lovely sunny morning. With Thame's big pitch & both teams having 11 girls it was decided to play 11v11 with no subs for either side.
Thame got the game under way & had the first chance but the ball ran away from the Thame striker & Millie Andrews in the Tower goal gathered the ball. The next five minutes Tower turned the pressure up keeping Thame pinned in their own half, Vicky Hinchliffe having the best of the chances but her shot was just wide of the post. Frances Haining was running her socks off for Tower in midfield & with ten minutes on the clock she played a great ball out to Millie Harris on the right, Harris powered forward & chipped the advancing Thame keeper, the ball bouncing a couple of times before it found the back of the net to give Tower the lead. Thame did not let the goal affect them & were battling & fighting for every ball as were Tower, just before half time Harris very nearly scored again, her shot whistling just over the bar.
Second half & Thame with it only being 1-0 knew they could easily get back in the match with a goal & very nearly did with a great shot being saved by Hinchliffe now in goal for Tower. This was a much more even half with both sides working very hard but both not being able to get the ball in the back of the net. With it being 11v11 the full width of the pitch was being used to great affect by both teams, Haining going on a great solo run down the right for Tower & when she finally was tackled she still jumped back up to win the ball despite having to come off for a few minutes injured after the tackle. Amy Williamson had a great chance to seal the points for Tower with five minutes left but she just couldn't sort her feet out in time & her shot was just wide but with just a minute left she made amends, a great run & cross from Harris & Williamson was unmarked in front of goal to wrap the game & the points up for Tower.
A fantastic game of football which could of gone either way, I think Thame may give somebody a shock in this summers 6's? Well played everybody.
